On "The Śāstra says: The three—body, eye, and visual form ... exist only in the desire realm and the first dhyāna": This distinguishes the scope—universal or restricted—of where the four exist. The statement "Herein, the eye faculty ... never dwells below" explains the verse: "The eye is not lower than the body." Commentary: A lower [being] may cultivate a higher eye, and a higher eye can depend on a lower body; a higher [being] does not cultivate a lower eye, and thus it is not lower than the body. The statement "Visual form and consciousness, in relation to the eye, are equal or lower, not higher" cites the second line of the stanza. The statement "Because a lower eye cannot see higher forms, and a higher consciousness does not depend on an eye of a lower plane" explains the meaning of the stanza. The statement "Visual form, in relation to consciousness, encompasses equal, higher, and lower" explains "form to consciousness is one to all" in the stanza. The statement "Visual form and consciousness, with respect to the body, are as visual form is to consciousness" explains the stanza's "The two with respect to the body are likewise." The statement "To explain the ear element in full ... is fully explained like the eye" explains the stanza's "As with the eye, the ear is likewise." The statement "The three—nose, tongue, and body ... are called lower" explains the stanza's "The next three are all of their own plane; body consciousness is of its own and lower planes." The statement "One should know that the mental element ... with little effort, great effect" explains the stanza's "One should know that the mind is indeterminate."
