The treatise says: "[Phenomena that have] objective opposition [are those that exercise their activity] with regard to form, and so forth, as their object." This is the second [section], which explains objective opposition (viṣaya-pratighāta). Within the passage there are two parts: first, pointing out their nature; second, citing proof to establish the conclusion. This passage is the first. "The twelve dhātus" refers to the six faculties and the six consciousnesses. "That portion of the dharma-dhātu that possesses objects" refers to mental concomitants (caittas). "With regard to form, and so forth, as their object" refers to the six faculties, the six consciousnesses, and so forth. Because they possess functioning with regard to form and the other objects, these are termed "objective spheres" (viṣaya). And because there is obstruction in this regard, they are said to have [objective] opposition.
