The Śāstra states: "Assisted by food and drink... protecting and defending the inner citadel." This explains [the matter of being] nutritionally augmented (aupacayika). According to this Śāstra, there are three [factors]: first, food and drink; second, sleep; third, meditative absorption (samādhi). According to the Saṃyuktābhidharmahṛdaya, celibacy (brahmacarya) is added. This Śāstra does not accept that, refuting it: "This merely involves no harm, and is not a distinct covering." As for "like an outer rampart protecting and defending the inner citadel": that which is of maturation necessarily has nutritional augmentation, but there is nutritional augmentation that lacks maturation. As with Aniruddha's divine eye, Aniruddha's physical eye had previously been lost. By the Nyāyānusāra: "There is that which is nutritionally augmented apart from that which is born of maturation, like the divine eye and divine ear attained through cultivation." According to this, when one's physical body is in the desire realm, attaining through cultivation the divine eye, ear, etc., are all solely nutritionally augmented, because they lack maturation belonging to the same realm. Making the small grow large and nourishing the weary to make it plump is called "nutritionally augmented". Another explanation is: growing because of nourishment, hence called "nutritionally augmented". Being the growth of nourishment, it is a tatpuruṣa compound. Question: Why is it that external insentient things are not said to have nutritional augmentation, such as grains and barley? Answer: Nutritional augmentation is spoken of in contrast to maturation. When there is maturation internally, nutritional augmentation is spoken of; externally there is no maturation, so nutritional augmentation is not spoken of. The power of nutritional augmentation is such that it protects maturation. Question: If wherever there is maturation there is nutritional augmentation, then minds, mental factors, etc., also have maturation; why are they not said to have nutritional augmentation? Answer: Rūpa dharmas can be spoken of as nourishing the weary to make them plump; how could mental dharmas, lacking form, be nutritionally augmented? Speaking in terms of a different sense, there is also nutritional augmentation [for them].
