The Śāstra says: "In which matters do how many anuśayas increase?" The large section below is the eighth, explaining the increase of afflictions. Within this there are three parts: first, explaining the matters of increase; second, explaining the consciousness that takes an object directly; third, explaining the consciousness that takes a cognitive object of an object. Below, about to explain the increase, it first poses a question. If answering separately according to individual matters, it would waste many words. Below it sets forth the method of brief answer. In classifying cognitive objects, there are sixteen: that is, fifteen for the three realms and five categories, and adding the uncontaminated makes sixteen distinctions. There are sixteen cognizing consciousnesses, meaning the uncontaminated and the five categories across the three realms. The three stanzas below explain the variations in the pairing of the sixteen consciousnesses against the sixteen objects.
