The treatise says, "There is contemplation of impurity... because of the distinction," which is an analysis into four alternatives. Practiced familiarity is not small in mastery; not yet familiar is small in mastery. Focusing on one's own body is small in object; focusing up to the ocean is not small in object. That which is small in object but not small in mastery refers to practiced familiarity focusing on one's own body. That which is small in mastery but not small in object refers to not yet familiar, with the object extending up to the ocean. That which is small in mastery and also small in object refers to not yet familiar, focusing only on one's own body. That which is not small in mastery and also not small in object refers to practiced familiarity focusing up to the ocean. Among practiced familiarity, etc., practiced familiarity is the first alternative; not yet familiar is the second alternative; not yet familiar is the third alternative; practiced familiarity is the fourth alternative. Among the objects, "one's own body" is the first alternative; "up to the ocean" is the second alternative; "again one's own body" is the third alternative; "again up to the ocean" is the fourth alternative. If the text were fully written out, it should say: "one's own body, up to the ocean; one's own body, up to the ocean"—it lacks one repetition.
