On the Śāstra's statement: "Furthermore, a sūtra says... are spoken of as permeating both stages": This cites the second sūtra as proof. Because speaking words of reality corresponds metaphorically to the four truths: suffering is truly suffering, and so on, are the words of what is real. Relying on the original road to swiftly depart corresponds metaphorically to enjoining the cultivation of the eight noble path factors. Since escaping saṃsāra relies on the same single road earlier and later, one knows that seeing and cultivation share the eight noble paths. If it were not so, the doctrine and the metaphor would not correspond. As for the metaphor spoken of, it is as a sūtra says: There were merchants who boarded a ship and entered the sea; reaching a seashore, there were rākṣasīs who appeared in lovely forms to entice the merchants, gradually bringing them into their city, each assigned to a woman. After many days had passed, a celestial spirit in the sky told the merchants: "Now within this city, these are not human beings; they are all the illusory deceits of rākṣasīs, and before long you will all be devoured." He thereupon proclaimed these words to them: "Within this city you will all experience suffering" — this metaphors the truth of suffering. "Do not be greedily attached" — this metaphors the truth of origination. "Urgently seek to leave the city" — this metaphors the truth of cessation. "Urgently seek the road out" — this metaphors the truth of the path. "Proclaiming words of reality" metaphors the four noble truths, revealing the path of seeing. The celestial spirit in the sky further told the merchants: "You should rely on the original road to swiftly depart. This present original road" metaphors enjoining the cultivation of the eight noble path factors, directly revealing the path of cultivation. "All past Buddhas relied on this original road of the path of cultivation to escape saṃsāra. If you wish to seek escape from the ocean of saṃsāra, you should rely on the original road of past Buddhas to swiftly depart from it." Those who seek to depart swiftly should diligently cultivate the eight noble path factors. By this, one knows that they also permeate the path of cultivation.
