The Śāstra states: "Cause, origin, arising, and condition... differ from the treatise": from here down cites a sūtra to explain the truth of origin. The text has three divisions: first, clarifying the differences among the four cravings; second, clarifying the differences in the states of the four cravings; third, concluding the names of the aspects of the four cravings. This is the first. The words "taking craving as root": "root" has the meaning of cause. The words "taking craving as species": "species" has the meaning of condition. The intent of this sūtra is to take craving as the truth of origin. What is called "craving" is indeed greed.
