The Śāstra states: "Due to differences corresponding to states... the craving at the time of initiating action arises": this is the second [division], clarifying the differences in the states of the four cravings. Generally, all sentient beings first give rise to a general craving for self toward the general self-entity; next, they give rise to a future general craving for self toward the future general self-entity; after that, they further give rise to a future specific craving for self, such as toward a celestial or human [rebirth]. Yet further, for the sake of the specific self, the greed-fetters for creating action give rise to craving for self that links to future rebirth, or, grasping the self at the time of creating future action, they give rise to craving for self that initiates action. The future fruit, the grasping-skandhas, is the entity of suffering; the preceding four causes are its truth of origin. These four states of craving are precisely the preceding four cravings.
