"The commentary says […] also definitely possesses seven," explains possession (samanvāgama). There are three stages: first, the stage of gradual increase; second, the stage of detachment from desire; third, the stage of the adept (aśaikha). This is the first. All ordinary persons and noble ones possess conventional cognition; ordinary persons who have not detached from desire possess only conventional cognition, and noble ones who have not detached from desire, while in the stage of patience regarding suffering, are identical to worldlings, because although they possess uncontaminated wisdom, it is not yet named cognition. Arriving at the second moment, the dharma-cognition of suffering is added, which means the addition of dharma-cognition and cognition of suffering, and thus three cognitions are possessed. At the fourth moment, subsequent cognition is also added; at the sixth moment, cognition of origination is also added; at the tenth moment, cognition of cessation is also added; at the fourteenth moment, cognition of the path is also added. Arriving at the path of cultivation (bhāvanāmārga), prior to detachment from desire, all alike possess seven cognitions, as before.
