On the Śāstra's 'The reasoning is not universally accepted, so it should not serve as proof': the author of the Śāstra refutes it. Although the Sarvāstivādins say that subsequent knowledge of the path is the path of cultivation, other schools do not accept that it is the path of cultivation; hence it is not universally accepted and should not serve as proof. The Nyāyānusāra states: 'Why is this not cultivated at the moment of subsequent knowledge of the path? This knowledge is exclusively an accessory of the path of seeing, whereas that [subsequent knowledge of the path] is subsumed under the path of cultivation; therefore it cannot be cultivated. The meaning of this is: through the cultivation of the wholesome [factors] of the seven stations serving as seeds, the path of seeing is able to arise. Therefore, when the path of seeing arises, it is called its accessory. Furthermore, this is why the World-Honoured One used the term "verge" with respect to the three truths, as the sūtra says: "the verge of the body, the verge of the arising of the body, the verge of the cessation of the body." No sūtra has ever spoken of "the verge of the path to the body," because no one can cultivate the path up to the ultimate boundary of the path.' Question: Among what is cultivated in the three stages, which is superior and which is inferior? Answer: The Nyāyānusāra states: 'In terms of the continuous series, the later is superior to the earlier, because its possession arises due to an augmented physical basis. If spoken of in terms of the realms, the upper are all superior to the lower. Therefore, what was previously cultivated as bound to the form realm is superior in realm but inferior in physical basis; what is cultivated in the later stage as bound to the desire realm is inferior in realm but superior in physical basis.' Here there are four alternatives, which should be considered properly.
