[On] the treatise's: "When a noble one produces the remaining … up to: because they only cultivate conventional [knowledge]": this clarifies all noble ones cultivating conditioned merits. Since they are conditioned, in actual practice they all cultivate conventional [knowledge]. In the future, a learner who has not detached from desire cultivates seven, and one who has detached from desire cultivates eight, which can be known by reference to the preceding [passages]. For a non-learner, dull [faculties cultivate] nine and sharp [faculties cultivate] ten, also as previously stated. As for "except for the subtle-of-subtle mind, which in the future cultivates only conventional [knowledge]": the Nyāyānusāra is also the same. Vibhāṣā 107 states: "When an already attained wholesome dharma manifests in the present, it cannot cultivate the future." By this one knows that what is referred to as 'cultivation' always initiates what was not yet previously attained. Vibhāṣā 155 states: "When generating a subtle-of-subtle mind, or when generating wisdom born of hearing or reflection, etc., regarding the uncontaminated faculties, one neither abandons nor attains them." Based on the Vibhāṣā, the subtle-of-subtle mind and the wisdom of hearing and reflection are equally stated not to cultivate the uncontaminated; it does not say that these three cultivate the contaminated in the future. Both this treatise and the Nyāyānusāra state that the subtle-of-subtle mind in the future cultivates only the contaminated; because the mind of wisdom born of hearing and reflection is not a mind of meditative absorption, it has cultivation through the power of another, but no cultivation through self-power. Based on the treatise text above, the subtle-of-subtle mind only cultivates the contaminated and does not cultivate the uncontaminated, while the two [kinds of wisdom] born of hearing and reflection do not cultivate at all.
