The passage of the śāstra from 'These four are only...' down to '...because they are inferior' explains that one borrows only the neutral (avyākṛta), not the defiled or the wholesome. Having been born above, one has already detached from the defilements of the lower stages, and one also does not give rise to inferior wholesome [minds]. Question: When one born in the upper three dhyānas gives rise to the lower two supernormal faculties of eye and ear, what kind of neutral mind is this? Some say it is solely the deportment mind (īryāpatha-citta), or a mind directed toward deportment, or resembling deportment. All these are not correct: the ear-consciousness cannot be a deportment mind, nor can the mind that produces vocal manifestative action be said to be a deportment mind, for that would contradict many treatises. If it is said that producing vocal manifestative action refers to the second master's position—where from the deportment mind a mental consciousness is further produced which takes the twelve sense-fields as its object, and is also called a deportment mind—and therefore this mind producing vocal manifestative action is called a deportment mind, this too is unreasonable. How could it be that above the second dhyāna the mind producing vocal manifestative action is in all cases produced subsequently to a deportment mind? If one relies on the first master's explanation, how could it be a deportment mind? The first master holds solely that the mental consciousness producing deportment is the deportment mind. Since speech is not deportment, how could it be deportment? From this it is known that the four neutral minds do not exhaust all minds. Since neutral form does not exhaust all form, what is there to prevent the four neutral types from also not exhausting mind? Question: Since you say that the four neutral minds do not exhaust neutral minds, we do not know what kind of neutral mind the borrowed consciousness is. Answer: This borrowed consciousness-mind is the intrinsically neutral (prakṛty-avyākṛta). Ear-consciousness is not deportment, so it is not deportment neutrality. The upper stages lack crafts, so it is not technical-craft neutrality. Transformations exist only in the mental consciousness, so it is not transformation neutrality. Ripened result is not produced from a different stage, so it is not ripened-result neutrality. Therefore it is known that it is solely the intrinsically neutral.
