The Śāstra states: "These four immeasurables... up to: enter the attainment of equanimity." This relates the distinctions among the four modes of activity. The Nyāyānusāra states: "Regarding the differences among these intentions (āśaya): contemplating sentient beings as oneself is love; desiring sentient beings to be free from suffering is compassion; rejoicing in the prosperity of others is sympathetic joy; not reflecting on the characteristics of friends and enemies is equanimity." The Vibhāṣā, fascicle 81, states: "The Venerable Vasumitra spoke thus: Bestowing benefit is the characteristic of love; removing decline is the characteristic of compassion; rejoicing in their attainment is the characteristic of sympathetic joy; abandoning partiality in impartiality is the characteristic of equanimity (thus far the text)."
