On the statement: 'The Śāstra says: up to and physical, vitality, and mind,' this explains the first two lines of the verse. 'At minimum possessing eight and lacking eight': it is only in two stages that one at minimum possesses eight. That is, first, one whose roots of good are severed definitely possesses the five sensations and physical, mind, and vitality, and definitely does not possess eight—the five of faith and so forth and the three anāsrava faculties. Six faculties are indefinite, namely the four faculties of eye and so on, and the female and male faculties, which may not be possessed.
