Regarding the passage in the treatise, “Other masters say … up to … the class of external worldlings”: This recounts the doctrine of the Mahīśāsaka school. This corresponds to the Vibhajyavādins according to the *Vibhāṣā*, which here translates as ‘Distinctionist masters.’ They cite sūtra evidence that the five faculties of faith and so forth are solely undefiled, because the discourses speak of them as being possessed only by noble ones. That is, they say that from the arhat down to the stream-enterer, those on the path of progression possess these five faculties of faith and so forth; hence they are known to be undefiled. As for “Furthermore, the World-Honoured One said: ‘If one completely lacks these five faculties of faith and so forth, I say that they abide in the class of external worldlings’”: this also, in the subsequent text, states that one who completely lacks the five faculties abides in the class of external worldlings; hence they are known to be undefiled. Although citing two passages of text, their meaning is the same: the noble possess them and the ordinary do not.
