The Śāstra says: "It should be known that sleep […] should be known according to the rule." This explains that sleep pervades all the aforementioned mental categories, and so is unobstructed in all cases. Dreamless sleep is exclusively indeterminate by nature; but based on sleep with dreams, it extends to all three natures. Thus among the unfixed, there are altogether four rules: first, greed, hatred, pride, and doubt arise solely by their own strength; second, wholesome regret and regret co-arising with the unshared extend to two—the unwholesome arises by its own strength, while the wholesome arises conjointly; third, sleep sometimes also has the capacity to arise co-presently with all mental categories; fourth, vitarka and vicāra definitely arise co-presently with all mental categories of the desire realm.
