[On the] Śāstra['s statement]: "There is no fault of infinite regress … there is no fault of infinite regress": This is the detailed answer. Although possession and non-possession are asked together, the two are not the same. Possession has great possession and small possession mutually acquiring each other at the same time; non-possession is not like this, because in the present there is no non-possession. Therefore we know that non-possession does not have small non-possession in the way that possession has [small possession]. With respect to a different sense, there is also the distinction between great and small non-possession: reversing great possession is called great non-possession, which is the non-possession of the original dharma obtained by great possession and its major and minor characteristics; reversing small possession is called small non-possession, which is solely the non-possession of great possession and the four characteristics. Therefore the *Vibhāṣā*, fascicle 158, says: 'The proper explanation is that a dharma and its arising, etc., are obtained by one and the same possession, because a characteristic and what is characterized are extremely intimate. Through this, one correctly resolves how the matter-aggregate, the conditioning-aggregate, etc., are obtained by a single possession.' The above is the treatise's text. Possession and non-possession are established in mutual opposition and cannot fail to correspond. Although there are no great and small non-possessions mutually [possessing] each other, since possession is not infinite, non-possession is also not infinite. Therefore the answer concerning infinite regress explains only possession, which thereby demonstrates that non-possession has no infinite regress, because it is established by reversing possession.
