The treatise says, "Expounding this at length [...] because there is nothing superior," referring to all the undefiled [states] from the dharma-knowledge-tolerance regarding suffering onwards. Knowledge of non-arising is a cause only for the equal, because there is nothing superior, and because the holy path of another vehicle cannot have it as a cause. Everything from the knowledge of exhaustion downwards is a cause for the equal and superior. The *Nyāyānusāra* says: "Because of this, although the levels [of the holy path] differ, the truth of the path serves mutually as cause because they are of the same kind. However, not all are causes for all. For what are they causes? Namely, for equal and superior fruits. Because they are born of application (prayoga), they are not causes for the inferior. The holy path of the first dhyāna may rely on the first dhyāna, and so on up to relying on the sphere of nothingness; the path of the second dhyāna and so on should also be understood in this way: [the causal relationship] exists regarding reliance on one's own or superior [levels], but does not exist regarding reliance on inferior levels. That is to say, the holy path of the first dhyāna relying on the first dhyāna is an equal-status cause (sabhāga-hetu) for the holy paths of the nine levels relying on the nine dhyānas. This [path itself] takes only the path relying on the first dhyāna as an equal-status cause; it does not take holy paths relying on superior [levels] as causes, because their nature is superior [while its own is inferior]. The holy path of the first dhyāna relying on the second dhyāna—excluding that relying on the first dhyāna—is an equal-status cause for the holy paths of the nine levels relying on the remaining dhyānas. This [path itself] takes only the holy paths of the nine levels relying on the first and second dhyānas as equal-status causes, not those relying on superior levels. And so on up to: if the holy path of the first dhyāna relies on the sphere of nothingness, it is an equal-status cause only for the holy paths of the nine levels relying on this sphere of nothingness, and this [path itself] universally takes the holy paths of the nine levels relying on the dhyānas of the nine levels as equal-status causes. As with the holy path of the first dhyāna relying on the nine dhyānas, the holy paths of the remaining dhyānas relying on the nine levels should be considered extensively according to their appropriate application."
