The treatise says: "The fruit of maturation should not [...] there is a limit in time." From here below, the author of the treatise refutes the *Vibhāṣā*. Two characteristics must be met to receive the name "maturation": first, by transformation and modification in continuum; that is, after the maturation cause has appropriated the fruit, it must undergo a different period of time wherein its power and efficacy transform before it can yield the fruit; this transformation is precisely the meaning of "ripening" (or maturation). Second, having a limitation of time in accordance with the force of the cause is also the meaning of ripening. In accordance with the force of the cause, it may be a hundred years, fifty years, and so forth. Just as worldly fruit ripens through transformation, and having ripened, lasts according to the limit of its force, possessing these two meanings it obtains the name "maturation."
