論「何等為六」，此先辨因。就中有三：一明六因、二明五果、三明法具因異。明六因中，一總列因名；二依名別釋；三定取、與；此下一頌總列因名。

On the Śāstra's statement: "What are the six?": this first distinguishes the causes. Within this there are three parts: first, elucidating the six causes; second, elucidating the five results; third, elucidating the differences in dharmas possessing the causes. Within elucidating the six causes: first, listing the names of the causes in general; second, explaining them individually according to their names; third, determining their apprehending and bestowing [of results]. The following verse lists the names of the causes in general.
