On the Śāstra's statement: "Because they do not have a single result of maturation or a single outflow result": this covers the previous seven pairs. Among the ten attendant phenomena, although they share one arising, staying, and cessation, fall into a single time period, and are identical in good nature and so forth, they lack the three shared aspects; therefore, they do not constitute cause[s of that kind]. The difference in the fifth, sixth, and seventh pairs is that the senses of a single result, [a single] maturation, and [a single] outflow can also be known. The statement regarding the first four pairs that they lack a single result, maturation, and outflow is extremely difficult to understand. When examining its meaning, it must be that uniting their power to grasp together constitutes the meaning of 'a single result'. Although the result is the same, if their power does not grasp it together, it is not a single result. Therefore, the Nyāyānusāra states: "Because the majority in the aggregate are not its result." This explains that the secondary characteristics are not called phenomena that attend the mind; that is precisely what is here meant by 'not a single result'. For example, when two people jointly realize the unconditioned analytical cessation, although the result is the same, it is not a single result; only when they are associated and together act as the cause capable of realizing [it] is it called 'a single result'. If one provides this explanation of 'not a single result' and so on, it will pervade all eight pairs; if not, why would the first four pairs, sharing the same results of human effort, maturation, and outflow, lack what cause such that they are not coexistence causes? Furthermore, the Śāstra summarizes the previous eight pairs by means of 'not having a single result of maturation or a single outflow result'; hence we know it covers the first four as well. Someone said: "Speaking horizontally, they cannot grasp a single result together; it is not known whether, viewed vertically, they can grasp it together or not."
