The Śāstra says, "If relying on the preparatory stage ... exclusively its own, not another stage": this clarifies emerging from the mind of the non-learner across the various stages. Among the eleven stages, the desire realm and the Peak of Existence lack the uncontaminated [paths] that sever the defilements of desire and of neither-perception-nor-non-perception. Even if one had previously attained mastery over desire, one still relies on the preparatory stage; even if one had mastery over the Peak of Existence, one still relies on [the stage of] nothingness. In all other stages, their own stages possess the uncontaminated. If one attains mastery in that stage, one enters relying on it, not relying on higher or lower stages, because that mind of emergence is not sought with exertion. Since emerging into one's own stage is easy, all emerge into their own stage. One who has attained mastery relying on the stage of neither-perception emerges relying on it. An arhat who relied on the preparatory stage, though his body is in the desire realm, has attained mastery over the desire-realm mind and emerges into it contiguously. Furthermore, when one's body is in neither-perception, in severing the defilements of the Peak of Existence, one must rely on a lower stage to give rise to the uncontaminated; therefore, the mind of emergence still emerges relying on the mind of neither-perception, because there is no mind of an even lower stage. When one's body is in the desire realm, relying on the higher preparatory stage to sever the defilements of the desire realm, the mind of emergence may emerge relying on the mind of the desire realm. Although one who is reborn in a higher stage does not give rise to a lower absorption, one who flows upward and is reborn in the heaven of neither-perception must give rise to a lower uncontaminated absorption.
