The treatise says: "Relying on their verse... therefore he is called Rudra." From here on, a verse of the heterodox is cited to corroborate that this is well stated: Īśvara causes suffering to sentient beings to produce his own joy. 'By being fierce and sharp, it can burn' refers to the heterodox account that there were three asuras who held three realms and flew through the air, passing beneath Īśvara; the deva could not bear it, shot them with a fiery arrow, and burned all three realms to nothing all at once—the fiery arrow being fierce and sharp, capable of burning the three realms. 'Dreadful and constantly tormenting' refers to his ability to string human skulls together and bind them around his head, and further to bind his arms with dragons and slay elephants to take their hides—this is dreadful and constantly tormenting. 'Delighting in eating blood, flesh, and marrow' refers to what he consumes. 'Therefore he is called Rudra': this is one name among the thousand names of Īśvara. This name means 'ferocious and evil.'
