8.41

論「如經頌言至已除欲」，引經證也。此頌是舍利子對外道說，外道計欲是外境也，佛法言欲即是貪也。第一句非外立，第二句述自宗，後兩句釋非境因也。

On the Śāstra's statement: "As a sūtra verse states ... has already eliminated desire": this cites a sūtra as proof. This verse was spoken by Śāriputra to non-Buddhists; the non-Buddhists claimed that desire is external sense-objects, whereas the Buddhadharma states that desire is precisely greed. The first line is not established by outsiders; the second line sets forth [our] own school; and the last two lines explain the reason it is not sense-objects.
