論「謂於前際至云何我曾有」，引經明前際愚惑也。「我於過去世為曾有非有」者，疑我有、無，即是疑其自性。「何等我曾有」者，疑我類也。既知我有，後疑我類，謂為色我？為受我？即蘊、離蘊等我類也。「云何我曾有」者，疑云何我為常、無常等也。

The Śāstra states: "That is, with regard to the prior limit... up to 'how did I exist?'" This cites the sūtra to clarify delusion and perplexity regarding the prior limit. 'Did I exist or not exist in the past life?' is doubting the existence or non-existence of a self, which is doubting its intrinsic nature. 'What kind of self did I have?' is doubting the category of the self. Having already thought that a self exists, one subsequently doubts its category, thinking: 'Was it a physical self? Was it a feeling self?'—that is, whether the category of the self is identical to the skandhas, separate from the skandhas, and so on. 'How did I exist?' is doubting how the self was permanent, impermanent, and so forth.
