On the treatise passage, "First, forming three in general... due to the distinction in faculties": This divides them into three in general due to three causes. Having only karma that initiates [rebirth] is attaining parinirvāṇa in the intermediate state; having karma that initiates and produces [rebirth] is attaining parinirvāṇa upon rebirth; having karma that initiates, produces, and subsequently matures [rebirth] is the upstream practitioner. Furthermore, lower afflictions belong to attaining parinirvāṇa in the intermediate state; middling afflictions belong to attaining parinirvāṇa upon rebirth; upper afflictions belong to the upstream practitioner. Furthermore, superior faculties belong to the intermediate state; middling faculties belong to rebirth; inferior faculties belong to the upstream practitioner.
