On the passage of the treatise from “Among these six ... up to ‘and because of mental liberation’”: this explains that one who was previously in the trainee stage [characterized by] liberation through faith is now, upon reaching non-learning, called “temporarily beloved mental liberation.” Because one constantly cherishes and protects the dharma one has attained, it is called “temporarily beloved”; and because the mind is liberated from the bondage of defilements, it is called “mental liberation.” A trainee lacks mental liberation, while an arhat of sharp faculties does not [need to] cherish [it] temporarily; possessing both [traits], this name is established for this [lineage].
