"The treatise says ... the factors of awakening (bodhipākṣikadharmas)": this text has three parts: first, explaining the two kinds of True Dharma; second, explaining the persons who can uphold it; third, explaining the duration of its persistence. This passage is the first, explaining the two kinds of True Dharma: first, the Dharma of teaching; second, the Dharma of realization. Teaching refers to the Tripiṭaka; realization refers to the factors of awakening of the three vehicles. Because realization is obtained through teaching, the Dharma of teaching is explained first. If one compares the ancient teachings with the present Buddha, the teaching comes first and the Buddha comes later, because the Buddha attained realization through the teaching. If one compares the present teaching with the speaker, the Buddha comes first and the teaching comes later, because the Buddha spoke the teaching. If taking the present realization and the present teaching, the teaching comes first and realization comes later; therefore realization is spoken of next. If through realization one can propagate the teaching, then when there is realization, the teaching persists.
