1.10

本緣起者，自迦葉遁形於鷄足、末田乞地於龍宮，雖大義少乖，而微言尚有。洎乎尊者鞠多，道不繼於三聖；摩訶提婆，亂真言於五緣。二部分宗，諍興於摩揭提國；五百羅漢，飛來於迦濕彌羅，一切有宗興茲國矣。

As for the root origin: since Kāśyapa concealed his form at Kukkuṭapāda and Madhyāntika begged for land from the Nāga Palace, although the broad doctrines diverged slightly, the subtle words still remained. When it came to the Venerable Upagupta, the Way was no longer carried on as under the three sages; and Mahādeva threw the true words into confusion through the five conditions. The two schools split their tradition, dispute arose in the country of Magadha, and five hundred arhats flew through the air to Kaśmīra; it was in this country that the Sarvāstivāda school arose.
