Thereupon the five hundred sages first compiled one hundred thousand verses to explain the Sūtrapiṭaka. Next they composed one hundred thousand verses to explain the Vinayapiṭaka. Afterwards they composed one hundred thousand verses to explain the Abhidharmapiṭaka, which is the Mahāvibhāṣā. Vasumitra deliberated and evaluated, and Aśvaghoṣa applied his literary brush, comprehensively explaining the Tripiṭaka to hang suspended for a thousand ages. The Dharma cloud was spread anew across distant realms, and the Buddha sun shone once more across realms of sand; such was the splendor of the transmission of the lamp! After the five hundred arhats had completed the council, they engraved stone and swore an oath that [the text] was permitted only within their own country and forbidden to foreign lands. They ordered yakṣa deities to guard the city gates and not allow it to be dispersed outward.
