The commentary explains: 'Yet to make [the body] graceful': the treatise provides two explanations. The first master explains: in order that the appearance of the supporting body be graceful, though the entity of the dhātu is one, they arise in two locations. If the eye and ear sense bases were each to arise as only one, and the nose had no two nostrils, the body would not be graceful. This explanation is not correct; the author of the treatise refutes it, saying: 'If it were originally like that, who would say it is ugly? Moreover, what gracefulness do cats, owls, and the like possess?' The second, correct explanation: in order that the generated consciousness be clear and graceful. In the world it is observed that when one closes one eye or the like, the discernment of form and so on is not distinct; therefore, the three sense faculties each arise in two locations.
