The commentary explains: Because the sentient beings to be transformed are of three grades, the World-Honoured One taught for them the three approaches of skandhas and so forth. Regarding the three kinds of delusion: for those who are deluded about mental factors and collectively grasp them as a self, the five skandhas were taught. Because among the five skandhas, one skandha is form, one skandha is mind, and mental factors are divided into the three skandhas of feeling, perception, and formations, teaching the five skandhas can shatter that grasping. For those who are deluded only about form and collectively grasp it as a self, the twelve āyatanas were taught. Because among the twelve āyatanas, ten āyatanas are form, and only manas and dharma are non-form, teaching the approach of āyatanas can shatter that grasping. For those who are deluded about both form and mind and collectively grasp them as a self, the eighteen dhātus were taught. Because the eighteen dhātus extensively explain form and mind—ten dhātus being form and the remaining eight being mind—teaching the approach of dhātus can shatter that grasping. The faculties are also threefold, namely superior, medium, and inferior faculties. Those of superior faculties are sharp and understand when taught concisely; for them the five skandhas were presented. Those of medium faculties are somewhat slower and understand only when taught the āyatanas. Those of inferior faculties are the dullest and require extensive explanation; thus the dhātus were expounded for them. The inclinations are also threefold: because of inclinations toward concise, medium, and extensive texts, the three of skandhas and so forth were taught in corresponding order.
