Commentary: From "Apart from the discernment of phenomena" down to the fourth line, "for this reason, it is handed down that [the Buddha] taught the Abhidharma," clarifies the intention behind teaching the treatise. "It is handed down that the Buddha taught the Abhidharma" clarifies the person who taught the treatise. Therefore, the three characters "taught the Abhidharma" in the fourth line extend to both places. "Discernment of phenomena" is wisdom; wisdom can extinguish afflictions, serving as the supreme expedient. Apart from wisdom, there is certainly no other supreme expedient capable of extinguishing the afflictions. Because of the afflictions of confusion, the world of sentient beings drifts in the ocean of birth and death across the three realms of existence; therefore, the Abhidharma was taught, because the Abhidharma explains wisdom. Although the treatise clarifies discipline and concentration, these are secondary, not primary. "It is handed down that the Buddha taught the Abhidharma": the World-Honoured Buddha taught Abhidharma scattered in various places, and Kātyāyanīputra and others compiled and arranged it, just as the Venerable Dharmatrāta compiled the Udāna verses such as the "Chapter on Impermanence" (the above is the text of the treatise). Udāna is translated here as "collected giving" or "collected and scattered." Collecting the explained meanings and scattering and bestowing them upon sentient beings is called udāna. "Dharmatrāta" means saving people by means of the Dharma. The Venerable Dharmatrāta collected what the Buddha taught on the meaning of impermanence into verses on impermanence, and so forth, down to collecting the meaning of non-self into verses on non-self. The clarification of the introductory section above is concluded.
