The commentary says: “Those” refers to those previously mentioned five faculties: eye and the rest. “Consciousnesses” refers to eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body consciousnesses. The five, eye consciousness and the rest, depend upon the five faculties, eye and the rest, and obtain their names from their bases, being called eye consciousness and so forth. The verse says “those consciousnesses” meaning the consciousnesses that depend on those [faculties]; hence they are called “those consciousnesses.” “Translucent forms upon which they depend” means that the five kinds of translucent form upon which those consciousnesses depend are called the five faculties: eye and the rest. Because the essence of the five faculties, eye and the rest, is clear and pure, like the light of jewels, they are called “translucent forms” (rūpaprasāda).
