The explanation says: Twenty thousand [yojanas] below this Jambūdvīpa is the great Avīci Naraka. Its depth and breadth are equal to the preceding, namely, each twenty thousand; therefore its bottom is forty thousand yojanas away from here. Because in it suffering is experienced without interval (avīci), unlike the other seven narakas where the experience of suffering is not constant, it is named "Without Interval" (Avīci). Take, for instance, the Saṃjīva Naraka: although the bodies of sentient beings are hacked, pierced, ground, and pounded in various ways, yet when they are momentarily blown upon by a cool wind, they revive as before; on account of this principle, the name Saṃjīva (Reviving) is established. In Avīci, there is no such occurrence. Other masters say: "In Avīci there is no suffering interspersed with pleasure, hence it is named Avīci; in the other hells, although there is no [pleasurable] fruition (vipāka), there is outflow (niṣyanda)."
