'Respectively, they are equal to the internal calamities': applied thought and discursive thought are the internal calamities of the first dhyāna, because they can burn the mind troubled by defilement, being equal to the external calamity of fire. The feeling of joy is the internal calamity of the second dhyāna, which, together with pliancy, moistens the body like water, being equal to the external calamity of water. The movement of breath is the internal calamity of the third dhyāna, for breath is wind, being equal to the external calamity of wind. The lower three dhyānas have such internal calamities and therefore suffer destruction by these external calamities. Question: 'For what reason is earth not also established as a calamity?' Answer: 'Because the physical world is itself earth; it is only admissible that fire and the like conflict with earth, but one cannot say that earth conflicts with earth.'
