Explanation: Relinquishing non-vows occurs through three kinds of conditions: 1. through death, because that which is relied upon is relinquished; 2. through obtaining the vows: that is, obtaining the prātimokṣa vows or obtaining the dhyāna vows, the bad vows are thereupon relinquished; 3. through the arising of both sexes, because that which is relied upon transforms. The treatise states: 'Even though one abiding in bad vows may at times give rise to the intention not to act, and lay down swords and weapons, if one does not receive and obtain the wholesome vows, there is no way to abandon the non-vows. For example, even if one avoids the causes and conditions that induce illness, if one does not take good medicine, the illness in the end will be hard to cure.'
