The explanation says: The characteristics of definite karmas briefly derive from four causes: (1) From heavy defilements and intensely pure minds; that is, karma produced by heavy afflictions or an intensely good mind. (2) And what is constantly done: although not produced with an intense mind, it is continually performed. (3) Arising toward fields of merit: that is, the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṃgha; or those who have attained superior fruits, that is, stream-enterers and aśaikṣas; or those who have attained superior absorptions, that is, the absorption of loving-kindness and the absorption of cessation. Toward such fields, even without heavy defilements or an intensely pure mind, and even if not habitually practiced, because the field is superior, the karma is definitely experienced. (4) Toward parents, whether done with a light or heavy mind, when acts of injury are committed, the fruit of the karma is definite. The above four causes are all subsumed under definite karma.
