The treatise says: 'Considered specifically according to the manifest signs, what is excluded is as stated. Taken comprehensively across latent and manifest, there is nothing excluded, meaning that apart from restraint, there are one, eight, and five (Explanation: intermediate wholesome [action] is called 'apart from restraint', meaning it is not restraint).' Operating together with one means: when an unwholesome or indeterminate mind is present, one obtains abstention from a single factor (undertaking a precept of one factor). Operating together with five means: when the wholesome mental consciousness without attendant physical matter is associated with right view, one obtains [abstention from] two factors, and so forth (Explanation: associated with right view, there are the three: right view and so forth. Furthermore, obtaining abstention from two factors, it then constitutes five. 'And so forth' includes obtaining abstention from five factors within an unwholesome or indeterminate mind). Operating together with eight means: when this mental consciousness is present, one obtains [abstention from] five factors, and so forth (Explanation: this preceding mental consciousness has the three: right view and so forth; further obtaining five factors, it then constitutes eight. 'And so forth' means including the wholesome five consciousnesses being present and obtaining abstention from six factors).
