The commentary says: The four fields of destiny (gati), suffering (duḥkha), beneficence (upakāra), and virtue (guṇa) being different is called "distinctions in the field." Due to distinction in destiny: giving to animals receives a hundredfold fruit, while giving to a person who has broken the precepts receives a thousandfold fruit; this is called distinction in destiny. Due to distinction in suffering: this refers to the seven material meritorious actions, which, because they relieve the suffering of others, have immeasurable merit: 1. giving to travelers; 2. giving to guests far from home; 3. giving to the sick; 4. giving to caretakers of the sick; 5. giving monasteries and parks; 6. giving constant food: faithful laymen in the Western regions, fearing travelers might starve in remote places, construct buildings, set up funds, store ample food and drink, and provide universally to all; or some specifically designate it for offering to renunciants, and because food is constantly given, it is called giving constant food; 7. giving according to the season: giving to them according to cold, heat, or wind.
