Explanation: Former masters (either Sautrāntika or Mahāsāṃghika masters) said: "Inducing the bliss of rebirth in heaven for one kalpa is the measure of one Brahmā-merit." Forty intermediate kalpas are called one kalpa, because it is equal to the lifespan of one kalpa of the Brahmā-purohita heaven. Therefore, a gāthā says: "A person of faith and right view / who cultivates the ten superior practices / thereby generates Brahmā-merit, / because it induces heavenly bliss for a kalpa." The ten superior practices are the addition of six kinds to the previous four Brahmā-merits: first, for the sake of saving the mother's life, relinquishing one's own life; second, saving the father's life, relinquishing one's own life; third, saving the Tathāgata's life, relinquishing one's own life; fourth, going forth into homelessness within the true Dharma; fifth, teaching another to go forth; sixth, when the wheel of Dharma has not yet turned, being able to request that the wheel of Dharma be turned. The intention of citing this verse is to prove that the four Brahmā-merits induce heavenly bliss for a kalpa. The word "and so forth" in the verse includes what is stated in the *Vibhāṣā*. The "measure of Brahmā-merit" stated here is the same as the measure of one merit among the karmas of the excellent marks mentioned previously.
