18.49

釋曰：若從頂位將得忍位，感惡趣業皆極為障，以忍超彼異熟地故（地獄果是）。如人將離本所居國，一切債主皆極為障。若有將得不還果時，欲界繫業皆極為障，唯除隨順現法受業（以不還果受欲現業，故除也）。若有將得無學果時，色、無色業皆極為障，亦除順現，二喻如前。

Explanation: When one is at the summit stage and about to attain the stage of forbearance, karma leading to the bad destinies greatly acts as an obstacle, because forbearance transcends that ripening plane (which is the fruit of the hells). It is like a person about to leave the country where he originally lived, and all his creditors greatly obstruct him. When one is about to attain the fruit of non-return, karma bound to the desire realm greatly acts as an obstacle, except for karma to be experienced in the present life (since a non-returner experiences karma of the desire realm in the present life, it is excluded). When one is about to attain the fruit of arhatship, karma of the form and formless realms greatly acts as an obstacle, also excluding what is to be experienced in the present life. The two similes are as before.
