'Those that take the path as object take six and nine stages': among the six defilements, those that take the truth of the path as object take the path of six stages and nine stages as object. The treatise says: 'The three kinds of anuśayas bound to the desire realm take as object only the path of the category of dharma-knowledge of six stages (the six stages are the threshold, intermediate, and the four fundamental dhyānas; only these six stages have the category of dharma-knowledge); whether counteracting the desire realm or capable of counteracting the rest, all are their objects, because their category is the same. (The explanation states: Dharma-knowledge of the threshold stage can counteract the desire realm; the category of dharma-knowledge of the five stages such as the intermediate can counteract the other higher realms. 'All are their objects' means that although the counteragents of the category of dharma-knowledge of these six stages differ, all are objects of the three defilements of the desire realm, because being of the same category of dharma-knowledge, all can be taken as object.) Taking nine stages as object: the eight stages of the form and formless realms each have three kinds of anuśayas, and each can take the path of the category of subsequent knowledge of the nine stages as object (the nine stages are the threshold and so forth, adding the three formless stages, excluding the peak of existence). Whether counteracting their own stage or capable of counteracting the rest, all are their objects, because their category is the same.' (The above is the text of the treatise. The explanation states: 'Whether counteracting their own stage' means that the category of subsequent knowledge counteracts its own stage. 'Counteracting other stages' means that the category of subsequent knowledge counteracts the other seven stages. Although the paths of these nine stages differ in counteraction, all are objects of the three defilements of the eight stages, because they are equally of the category of subsequent knowledge.)
