Commentary: The first two lines answer the seventh question; the latter two lines answer the eighth question. "The seven mental [dhātus]" are the six consciousnesses and the mind-dhātu. "Half of the dharmadhātu": within the dharmadhātu there are four categories of phenomena, but here only the mental factors are taken, which is not the whole, so it is called "half". These seven mental dhātus and half of the dharmadhātu have an intentional object. "To grasp" (ālambana) means to seize upon an object. Mind and mental factors are called that which grasps (ālambaka); the object is called the intentional object (ālambana). Having that intentional object is termed "having an intentional object" (sālambana). Regarding "the rest do not": "the rest" refers to the ten rūpa-dhātus and the unassociated phenomena included in the dharmadhātu; because they cannot grasp an object, they are termed lacking an intentional object (anālambana).
