Question: "Why are they called sabhāga and tatsabhāga?" Answer: "There are three explanations for this. The first explanation says: The three—faculty, object, and consciousness—interact with one another; hence they are called bhāga (portion/share). Since they equally share in this interaction, they are called sabhāga. The second explanation says: Or alternatively, bhāga is their own function (kāritra). Performing one's own activity is called performing one's own work. Since they equally possess a functional share, they are called sabhāga. The third explanation says: Or alternatively, bhāga is the contact (sparśa) produced. When the three assemble, they produce contact; since they equally produce contact, they are called sabhāga. Regarding tatsabhāga, the treatise says: 'Because the non-sabhāga shares the same generic class with that which is sabhāga, it is called tatsabhāga.' The explanation says: For example, an eye that does not see visible form is called non-sabhāga. This non-sabhāga shares the generic class with that eye which sees visible form; hence it is called tatsabhāga. That they 'share the generic class' means: they share the same self-nature of the eye, they mutually induce one another, and they are mutually connected."
