"Ignorance is not established separately, because it is not capable of grasping" means that ignorance is not established separately as a grasping because it is by being capable of grasping existences that it is called "grasping." Ignorance refers to the characteristic of non-comprehension; because it is not capable of grasping, it is not established as a grasping, but can only be spoken of as grasping together with the rest. These four graspings above are explained according to the Sarvāstivāda school. If one relies on the Sautrāntikas, the four graspings take greed as their essential nature: greed arising with the objects of the five desires as its object is called grasping at sensual desire; greed arising with the sixty-two views as its object is called grasping at views; greed arising with rules and observances as its object is called grasping at rules and observances; and greed arising with the doctrines of self of the three realms as its object is called grasping at the doctrine of self. Therefore, for them the four graspings take greed as their substance.
