The explanation says: Because the mixed cultivation of the fourth dhyāna has five grades, the Śuddhāvāsa heavens are only five: 1. inferior grade, 2. middling grade, 3. superior grade, 4. higher-superior grade, and 5. supreme grade. The first grade has three—that is, three mind-moments: first arises one uncontaminated, next arises one contaminated, and finally arises one uncontaminated. The second grade has six—that is, three more mind-moments added to the previous ones make six. The third grade has nine—that is, three more mind-moments added to the previous ones make nine. The fourth grade has twelve—that is, three more mind-moments added to the previous nine minds make twelve. The fifth grade has fifteen—again three mind-moments arise, which added to the previous twelve make fifteen. These five grades, in their respective order, karmically induce rebirth in the five Śuddhāvāsa heavens. It should be understood that here the force of the uncontaminated perfumed and cultivated the contaminated, causing it to karmically induce rebirth in the Śuddhāvāsa heavens; it is not that the uncontaminated itself can karmically induce rebirth in the Śuddhāvāsa heavens, because it detests and turns away from existence.
