Explanation: "The divine eye and ear" refers to the supernormal powers of the eye and ear: based on the subtle material eye and ear faculties produced by the four dhyānas, seeing forms and hearing sounds are called the divine eye and ear. These are called "divine" because they are subsumed under the stages of concentration. There are three kinds of divine eye: first, acquired by birth, namely being born among the devas; second, acquired by cultivation, which is as explained above; third, resembling the divine, namely acquired through karma, such as that of wheel-turning monarchs, ghosts and spirits, and the intermediate state. Only the divine eye and ear faculties acquired by cultivation are constantly active (sabhāga) and flawless, capable of grasping forms and sounds in all directions that are obstructed, subtle, distant, and so on. Hence a verse says: "The physical eye, toward all directions, / is obstructed by subtle and distant forms / and lacks the capacity to see them; / the divine eye sees without omission."
