Regarding 'having names, meanings, speech, and the path as objects, they have non-retrogressing cognition as their nature', this defines their intrinsic natures. When a non-retrogressing cognition takes expressor names as its object, it is called 'unimpeded knowledge regarding teachings'. Names, phrases, and syllables are collectively called 'names'. These names, phrases, and syllables maintain the expressed meaning and give rise to understanding in beings; therefore, they are called 'teachings' (dharma). Furthermore, when a non-retrogressing cognition takes the expressed meaning as its object, it is called 'unimpeded knowledge regarding meanings'. Furthermore, when a non-retrogressing cognition takes regional expressions as its object, it is established as 'unimpeded knowledge regarding expressions'. Furthermore, when a non-retrogressing cognition takes unobstructed speech that accords with correct principles as its object, as well as the two paths of sovereign concentration and wisdom, it is called 'unimpeded knowledge regarding eloquence'. Unobstructed speech is called 'eloquence'; the two paths of concentration and wisdom are able to give rise to eloquent speech, and since the path is the cause of eloquence, it is also called 'eloquence'. Because it belongs to those of sharp faculties, it is called 'non-retrogressing cognition'. Because cognition observes names and so forth with decisive lack of impediment, it is called 'unimpeded knowledge'. Therefore, the four unimpeded knowledges have non-retrogressing cognition as their nature.
