28.85

釋曰：諸無漏定皆能斷惑，諸淨近分亦斷煩惱，即欣上厭下斷也。言近分者，簡根本地，以根本淨不能斷惑，不能斷下，謂已離故；不能斷自，自所縛故；不能斷上，以勝己故。中間禪淨亦不斷惑，故言近分。

Explanation: All uncontaminated absorptions are able to abandon afflictions; all pure threshold stages also abandon afflictions, namely through abandonment by delighting in the higher and detesting the lower. The expression 'threshold stages' excludes the fundamental grounds, because pure fundamental [dhyānas] cannot abandon afflictions: they cannot abandon the lower, because [that has] already been detached from; they cannot abandon their own, because they are bound by their own; they cannot abandon the higher, because [the higher] surpasses themselves. The pure intermediate dhyāna also does not abandon afflictions; hence [the verse] speaks of the 'threshold stages'.
